Our client

Joytech PLC is a leading vertically integrated producer of fresh herbs, niche vegetables, ornamental plants and cut flowers. Their technologically advanced growing methods are rooted in over 40 years of accumulated agricultural knowledge and 20 years of operations in Ethiopia.

Joytech has two farms in the green highlands of Ethiopia, close to Addis Ababa and its international airport. This provides diverse growing conditions and excellent transport connections while supporting high food safety standards.

The role

As Compliance Manager, you will lead compliance across Joytech’s agricultural production and post-harvest and packing operations. You will ensure the company meets international certification standards and customer requirements. Your scope covers food safety, working conditions, health and safety and environmental compliance.

You will report to the General Manager and coordinate audits across the business. You will maintain effective control systems and work with farm management and operational teams to address risks and improve compliance. The role involves regular travel between the company’s farms and packing facilities.

Key responsibilities

Manage certification and audit requirements for BRCGS, GLOBALG.A.P., Tesco Nurture, GRASP, LEAF Marque and SMETA.
Lead audit preparations and serve as the primary contact for certification bodies, auditors, customers and regulators.
Conduct internal audits and risk assessments, maintain documentation and ensure corrective actions are completed.
Lead HACCP and food safety management systems, including hygiene, sanitation, pest control, traceability and recall procedures.
Work with HR to ensure compliance with labour laws and social standards, covering working conditions, employee welfare and grievance procedures.
Coordinate health and safety activities, including risk assessments, emergency preparedness and safety training.
Monitor environmental compliance, water use, waste management, chemical handling and resource efficiency.
Train teams on compliance requirements and report findings, progress and significant risks to senior management.

Candidate profile

Seven or more years of relevant experience in compliance, quality assurance, food safety or certification, preferably in fresh produce, horticulture or packing operations.
Hands-on experience managing GLOBALG.A.P. and BRCGS audits. Experience with GRASP, SMETA, LEAF Marque and Tesco Nurture is highly desirable.
Two or more years of experience coordinating certification audits is preferred. Professional auditing or food safety qualifications are an advantage.
Knowledge of agricultural and food safety standards and Ethiopian labour, safety and environmental regulations.
Strong audit management, documentation, reporting, analytical and corrective-action skills.
The ability to work independently and coordinate multiple departments and certification programmes.
Excellent written and spoken English and Amharic, with strong Microsoft Office skills.
Willingness to travel regularly between company farms and packing facilities.
A bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Food Science, Food Technology, Environmental Science, Quality Management or a related field. A relevant master’s degree is highly preferred.
