Variety Registration Manager, JoyTech PLC (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)

Joytech PLC is a leading vertically integrated producer of fresh herbs, niche vegetables, ornamental plants and cut flowers. Their technologically advanced growing methods are rooted in over 40 years of accumulated agricultural knowledge and 20 years of operations in Ethiopia.

Joytech has two farms in the green highlands of Ethiopia, close to Addis Ababa and its international airport. This provides diverse growing conditions and excellent transport connections while supporting high food safety standards.

The role

As Variety Registration Manager you will be responsible for coordinating and managing the registration, evaluation, and introduction of new crop varieties in Ethiopia.

You will serve as the primary liaison between Joytech, regulatory authorities, breeders, suppliers, and internal production teams to ensure that promising varieties are properly evaluated, registered, and commercialized in accordance with national regulations and market requirements.

Location: Addis Adaba, Ethiopia (With frequent national travel)

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end variety registration process with the relevant Ethiopian authorities.
  • Coordinate variety trials, demonstrations, and technical evaluations.
  • Maintain complete and accurate registration records, technical files, and regulatory documentation.
  • Work closely with agronomists, production teams, farmers, and breeding partners.
  • Monitor trial progress, collect data, and prepare technical reports and recommendations.
  • Maintain continuous communication with management and provide regular progress updates.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor existing commercial varieties and identify opportunities for new introductions.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and company procedures.
  • Travel extensively to production sites and trial locations across Ethiopia.


Candidate profile

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) or higher in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related agricultural discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of vegetable crops and market requirements, including peppers (Serrano, Chili, Dry Pod), tomatoes (determinate, indeterminate, Roma), and other commercial crops.
  • Good understanding of varieties currently available in the market.
  • Practical crop production experience is mandatory.
  • Experience in variety trials is an advantage.
  • Experience with variety registration processes is a strong advantage.
  • Fluent English and Amharic are mandatory; Oromiffa is a strong advantage.
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel extensively.
  • Strong computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and smartphone applications.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to proactively follow up on tasks.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to build positive relationships with growers, colleagues and other stakeholders.
