Lake Operations Hardware Manager, Yalelo Zambia (Siavonga, Zambia)

Yalelo Zambia is a leading producer of freshwater fish in Zambia. The company has developed an integrated operation covering fish farming, distribution and a nationwide network of more than 90 branded retail shops.

Its production facility is located on the shores of Lake Kariba in Siavonga, where tilapia is farmed in large cages on the open water. The company continues to grow, creating an exciting operational environment in which reliable equipment, well-maintained infrastructure and strong lake operations are essential.

The role

As Lake Operations Hardware Manager, you will oversee all hardware and equipment to ensure maximum productivity and output, with all assets related to lake operations well maintained.

You will be responsible for the maintenance of equipment, the diving team, cage maintenance, net mending and net deployment. You will report to the Deputy Lake Operations General Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, manage and monitor maintenance and minor repairs budgets for cages, nets, moorings, platforms and associated infrastructure.
  • Prioritise maintenance activities based on operational risk and budget availability, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Oversee the timely execution of preventative maintenance and minor repairs, including bird net repairs, rope splicing and pest control, to minimise unplanned costs and downtime.
  • Monitor and ensure that all fixtures, including cages, nets, centre buoys and boats, are inspected and maintained according to the weekly and monthly schedules by the team members.
  • Ensure the correct procedure is followed on net exchange to prevent damages.
  • Take ultimate responsibility for the daily execution of planned tasks, including nets being deployed on time.
  • Ensure equipment damage is reported immediately and relevant action is taken.
  • Order and install new CAPEX material, particularly cage sites.
  • Direct planning daily, weekly and further in advance for the smooth running of lake operations.
  • Ensure that a weekly execution plan for the following week is shared every Friday.
  • Conduct quarterly inventories for all hardware equipment.
  • Lead all operations, ensuring good procedures and productivity for divers, net mending, net deployment, cage maintenance and fabrications, and coxswains.
  • Ensure accountability is built into the team and underperformance is not tolerated.
  • Instil a culture where pride is taken in the work and care of fish and equipment is a priority.
  • Ensure team safety by promoting the use and provision of the right PPE and diving gear, and ensuring mandatory compliance with health and safety guidelines and technical guidelines.
  • Ensure maximum team productivity and efficiency through inspection and timely maintenance.
  • Ensure SOPs are updated, adhered to and enforced, driving strong compliance.

 

Candidate profile

  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Fisheries Science, Aquaculture, Natural Resources, Mechanical Engineering or another related field is an advantage.
  • Two years or more of progressive supervisory experience in a similar field.
  • Previous experience in people management or team leadership is mandatory.
  • Experience in procurement and supplier management is preferred.
  • An affinity with working on water and lake-based operations.
