Our client

Leopard Recruitment and our client are looking for a General Manager for their Malawi Operations. Our client is a protein producer and trader with operations in Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and Botswana.

The role

As General Manager you will spearhead the strategic and operational management of the company’s protein sales and trading business in Malawi. You will further expand the geographical footprint in Malawi, strengthen control over the supply chain operations and grow and professionalize the team. In order to navigate volatile exchange rates, you will also be responsible for setting up a commodity trading arm. Next to that you will be expanding the clients impact program in Malawi.

You will report to the Sales Director of the group and will have 2 direct reports, a finance manager and a sales & operations manager. The total team in Malawi currently consists of 10 people.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and implement business strategies to grow the protein sales and expand market presence across Malawi.
  • Establish and oversee a commodity trading arm focused on exporting goods to mitigate foreign exchange risks.
  • Set and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive business growth and profitability and create a culture of transparency, performance driven and a winners mentality. 
  • Identify opportunities in the protein trading business to further expand our business or partner with existing other businesses.
  • Set up a Lilongwe coldstorage, office and shop to further penetrate the Lilongwe market.
  • Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and financial reports for the protein import and trading divisions.
  • Manage currency exposure and implement strategies to mitigate exchange rate risks.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team across both Malawi offices.
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment that encourages innovation and accountability.
  • Oversee recruitment, training, and performance evaluations to build organizational capacity.
  • Build a network of organisations active in aquaculture for possible partnerships for building our impact program.

Candidate profile  

  • 8+ years of leadership experience in FMCG, food, agriculture or protein industries.
  • Proven track record in expanding operations, setting up new teams and expanding sales volumes.
  • Financial ability to manage budgets, margins and profitability.
  • Experience working in an international set-up with direct and indirect reporting lines.
  • Enthusiastic, driven and motivated personality with a flexible mindset.
  • Integrity, accountability and adaptability in dynamic market conditions.
